Mission: Reveal insights and attitudes to litter amongst South Australians to inform future KESAB communications to ultimately reduce inappropriate behaviour during the day and when the guard is down when having a good time with friends night. Litter has has environmental costs as well as significant costs of clean-up services.
Journey: Research included stakeholder interviews, ethnographic observation of young males and a quantitative study to uncover and segment consumers by attitudes and behaviour patterns.
Impact: KESAB identified a clear gap in consumer behaviour and a need to encourage people to place rubbish in the bins provided. From the outcomes of the research, KESAB developed a campaign toolbox to commence in Adelaide, and be rolled across Australia at a later date. The research highlighted the challenge of influencing young males, particularly at night, and that the solution needed to be clever and make it easy. Square Holes also worked on a fascinating study with The Department of Environment, Water & Natural Environment to determine community wants and needs in relation to the future management of Lake Albert and Narrung Narrows. The study provided understanding of how a community copes with environmental challenge, and a compelling story to present to government funders. "Square Holes undertook a Community Requirements Study as part of the Lake Albert Scoping Study - a project aimed at identifying and analysing a range of potential management actions to reduce salinity in Lake Albert. Square Holes’ methodology was on target, and their manner of engaging the community meant we got a great insight into what the community was thinking. In two words, Square Holes are professional and innovative. They were excellent to work with and I am very pleased with the final report. I also understand that the community is satisfied with how their input was captured and documented."
